Becoming a DJ?
i am interested in becoming a DJ just for fun. I dont have any sound recording/sampling equipment or lighting or DJ decks/mixers but was just wondering where to get good quality stuff cheap
i am planning to do Music Tech for a level next year
i have a name kind of sorted out and i know its wierd that i am a 15 year old girl who wants to be a DJ but ah well!
also, if you could give me some of your favourite songs that i could edit and jazz up a bit and make it sound all technoie then please suggest something!

I don’t think its weird at all that you want to be a dj. I’ve been a performing dj for eight years, and i was only 14 years old when i started.
For you, i would recommend starting with computer programs, and a computer, if you don’t have one. My favorite mixing program is Traktor 3, but i believe its not available for mac. With Traktor you can use certain external mixers. You can also get a dual-output soundcard which allows you to cue through the headphones and play live dj sets via your laptop. I’ve heard that Virtual DJ is good, and also, you can mix on Ableton Live. You can go on to sites like beatport.com which sells mp3 & wave files and has a wide variety of electronic music, from which you can hear samples of each track. This way, you can burn these files onto cds and play them live at dj events. Only about 10% of electronic music appeals to me, so i find it helpful to buy the individual tracks as opposed to paying 25 bucks for a cd with a couple good tracks on it. Free downloads are usually of low standard of quality for playing out live.
If you want to go directly to turntables, you would choose between records or cds. My personal suggestions would be cds, as its hard to find many things on record, and it is expensive to get them cut, and even more expensive to get them pressed. Some people would argue that record turntables are more realistic, however i believe that neither is superior, and it comes down to a matter of taste. If you want a starter set-up for djs, i would go for the pioneer cdj-200s (2 of them) and a behringer cross-fader. All together is about $750. In my friends experiences, it is more worthwhile to buy new when you are getting cdjs.
As for music ideas, well there are so many electronic genres out there, that i could probably name a dozen off the top of my head, but mostly i am into psy-downtempo, psy-dub, dub-step, glitch-hop breakbeats, hip-hop, and trance.
